Rowing Race

Rowing Race is a 300-metre rowing race in which every fold and open is one stroke. You race against rival boats and your own best run on the same water. Rhythm beats power here: a player who follows the cox's rhythm is faster than one who pulls at random speed.

How to play

  1. Put the phone flat open on a table and press ⟲ 180°.
  2. Folding pulls the oars, opening brings them back. A deeper fold is a stronger stroke.
  3. The cox calls the rhythm; match your strokes to it.
  4. The boat with the dashed outline is your best race. Try to beat it too.
  5. If the sensor doesn't work, tapping the screen also counts as a stroke.

Tips

How close is it to real rowing?

In real rowing, speed depends on the crew's rhythm as much as on the power of each stroke; a rower who rushes while the boat glides between strokes acts like a brake. The game simplifies this: every stroke gives at least a minimum of power, good rhythm adds to it, and a rushed stroke cuts the boat's speed. Your race is recorded and appears as a ghost boat next time.

What do you need?

Katla games run in the browser; there is nothing to download or install. The games read the phone's fold angle from its motion sensor, so they play best on foldable phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip. On a phone that doesn't fold you can tilt the phone with your wrist instead of moving the top half, and most games can also be played by tapping the screen. Motion sensors only work over a secure connection (https).
